Learn how to set your Mac up so you can AirPlay from your iPad or iPhone to your Mac.
With macOS Monterey, Apple introduced AirPlay to the Mac! With AirPlay, you can play whatever is on your iPad or iPhone directly on your Mac. In this video, I show you where you can turn this feature on and off (it can cause conflicts with specific apps that mimic AirPlay), and how you can find your Mac on an iPad and iPhone to AirPlay on.
Video TranscriptionIn this video, I’m going to show you how you can AirPlay to your Mac from your iPad, your iPhone. This was introduced with Mac OS Monterey.

Let’s go to my Mac. Now with the Mac, if you’re using Mac OS Monterey, what you can now do is AirPlay to your Mac, your Mac will show up as an AirPlay receiver on your iPad or your iPhone. Now there is a setting for this. So let’s go and open up my System Preferences. What I do is I go up to the Apple menu, and then we go over to our System Preferences. From here what we need to do is go to sharing, we need to make sure that AirPlay receiver is turned on it should be turned on by default, but in some cases, you may need to turn this off. If you use an app such as reflector reflector allows you to basically the same thing with reflector you can use your Mac as an AirPlay receiver much like we can do with Mac OS Monterey here, but you do have a few more features with reflector.

So if you want to use an app like reflector, and there are a few of them out there that do the same thing, what you may need to do is turn this off. But if you don’t use one of those apps, you can just leave this on. So now let’s see how this works. Let’s close this. And now we’re going to go to my iPad and my iPhone. Let’s first look at my iPad. In order to use AirPlay if you have an iPad, what you do is you go to the control center. So I’m going to go to the upper right hand corner here and I swipe down and I’m looking at my control center. From here we need to go to our AirPlay control. Now right now I am using AirPlay to show this this is why this is highlighted here. But when I select this, let’s say I wanted to change what this is airplane to I want to change it to my MacBook Air. All I have to do is just click on this. And you’re going to see my MacBook Air here. And all I have to do is just select it. And what is showing on my iPad here will now show on my MacBook Air. Same thing with the iPhone. So let’s go over to my iPhone.

I swipe up. And now what I need to do is go to my control center. So I swipe down from the upper right hand corner, I’m in my control center. And then you’re going to see screen sharing, I tap on it. And my Mac here will show up. If I were to tap on either one of these, it would show up on my Mac here.

So that’s how we use airplay on the Mac. This was introduced with Mac OS Monterrey, and it should be on by default, it’s located in your System Preferences under sharing. In some cases, you may need to turn it off for specific software. But again, in most cases, you’ll want to leave that on when it is on your Mac will just show up as another receiver when you go to your iPad or your iPhone, all you have to do is just go to airplay in the control center on either one of the devices. And then your Mac will show up tap on that and it’ll show up on your Mac. And again, this was introduced with Mac OS Monterey. So if you’re using an older version of Mac OS, you will not be able to use airplay. So that’s how we can AirPlay our iPad or iPhone to our Mac.
