Learn how to keep your folders on top with the desktop in macoS.
In this lesson for macOS Mojave, I look at how to keep folders on top when looking at the Desktop in the Finder. When you keep them on top, you will find them above any files while looking at your desktop. See how to keep your folders on top of the Desktop in this lesson for macOS.

Now let’s take a look at another new feature with desktops and macOS Mojave. We can now keep folders sorted on top. This is another one of my favorite features in macOS Mojave. Let’s see how we do this.
Let’s go to my Mac. Let’s take a look at my desktop through a window. I’m going to go down to my Finder here. Now I’m going to go over to my desktop. If we look here, we can see that we have all of my files, and then we also have my folders. Now what I like to do is I want to keep my folders sorted on top. In past versions of macOS, we could do this when we’re looking at a window. To do this, what we did is we went up to Finder, and then we go over to our Preferences.
Under Preferences, in older versions of macOS, when we go to Advanced, there’s an option for keeping folders on top in windows. Let’s go ahead and select this. When we’re looking at my window here, we can see that the folders are sorted on top, and then I have all my files and folders. This is typically how I have my files and folders sorted. I like to have my folders on top with all of my files below that.
Well, if we look at our desktop, you’re going to see that my folders here are still below my stacks. What I would like to do is, I would like to apply the same sorting, keep my folders on top while I’m looking at my desktop. While with macOS Mojave, we can now do that. I’m going to close this window. Again, what we need to do is we need to go up to Finder, and then we go over to Preferences.
In addition to keeping our folders on top when we’re looking at our windows, what we can also do now is keep them on top on our desktop. I click on this, and now we can see that my two folders are on top. If I go and add another new folder, let’s go and close this. I want to add another new folder. I go up under File in the menu bar, and then we go to New Folder. Where do you think it’s going to place it? It’s going to place it on top.
That’s how we can keep our folders on top, on our desktop in macOS Mojave.
