Siri’s New Compact Design
Learn about Siri’s new compact design and how you can turn Siri captions on and show your speech as text.
In this video for the iPhone, I show you the new compact design for Siri. This compact design was introduced with iOS 14. Now, instead of taking over your entire display, Siri shows up at the bottom of your display. There are also a couple new features, you can turn on Siri captions and show your speech as text. See the new compact design for Siri in this video for the iPhone.
Video Transcript (video also has closed captions):
In this video, we’re going to look at Siri’s new compact design Apple introduced with iOS 14. Let’s go to my iPhone.
Now in past versions of iOS, when you use Siri, it took over your entire display. Well, now, when we use Siri with iOS 14, we get a compact design. It no longer takes over your entire display. So I’m going to press and hold on to my sleep/wake button here, and I’m going to have Siri. We can see it is listening to me or she is listening to me, and it’s down below at the bottom of my display. I’m just going to cancel outside here. She can’t understand what I’m saying. So that’s the new compact design.
But there’s one catch with this compact design Siri, no longer transcribes what she is saying to you. As an example, let’s go and ask her what the temperature is outside. I press in on the sleep/wake button. What’s the temperature outside? From here, we can see what the weather is outside. We have our widget that pulls up at the top, but there’s no caption of what Siri said.
How do we get this caption or transcription of what Siri is saying? Well, we need to go to our settings app. From here, we need to go to our Siri’s settings. You’re going to see an option for Siri responses. I tap on this, and then what I do is I turn on always show Siri captions. Tap on the slider to turn it on. Now, one other option is as you can always show speech. This is going to be what you are saying. I’m going to turn this on as well. I swipe up to go back to my home screen.
Now let’s ask what the temperature is outside again. You’re not only going to see what I am saying, but in addition to that, you’re going to see what Siri’s response is as text. What’s the temperature outside. So now I can see what I said as well as what Siri said.
So that Siri’s new compact design on the iPhone. It no longer takes over the entire display. It just shows up at the very bottom of your display on the iPhone. Now being that it is a new compact design, it no longer, the iPhone no longer shows you what Siri is saying. You can turn this back on in the Settings app, go to settings, and then go to Siri & Search, select the options for Siri responses. From there you’ll see captions.
So that’s a look at Siri’s new compact design on the iPhone.
