In this lesson for macOS Mojave, I look at how to use split-view when working with apps in full-screen. When you use split-view, you can place two apps or folders side-by-side while in full-screen view on the Mac.

Introduction: In this video, we’re going to take a look at how we use split-view on the Mac. With split-view, we’re able to work with two different windows side-by-side while we’re in full screen. Let’s take a look at split-view on the Mac. Let’s go to my Mac.
Let’s go and open up a couple of Finder windows. I’m going to go Command+N. We’re looking at my home folder. Let’s go and open up another one, Command+N, and let’s go over to my documents. Now, what I want to do is I want to open these up in full screen and work with them side by side. I don’t want to have any distractions.
Opening an app in Full Screen: To open up a window or an app in full screen, if you recall, what we do is we click on the green dot. Now, when I do this, what it’s going to do is to open this window into full screen. Then, what I’m going to do is I’m going to add the second window as a split-view. Now, first, let’s go and open up this window in full screen.
Adding another App to Full Screen for Split View: Now, what I want to do is I want to work with that other window as well as this window, so I have to use a split-view. To use split-view, what we do is we go to our Mission Control so we can use the Control-Up arrow, or I have a trackpad. What I’m going to do is I’m just going to swipe up with three fingers. Now, I’m in my Mission Control.
If you recall, we have our different spaces. I opened up this window here as a separate space. Now, what I’m going to do is I’m going to drag this window here, macOS Mojave, on top of my Finder window. When I do that, it’s going to open up as a split-view. Let’s go and do that. I click and drag, and then you’re going to see we have the little plus. I can add it to the right side, or what I can do is I can add it to the left side. I’m going to add it to the left side. Now, we have a split-screen. When I click on it, we can see we have macOS Mojave here, and then we have my documents there. I’m able to work with both windows even though I’m in full screen. This is what split-view is.
Now, we can also have different apps side by side. Let’s say I wanted to have my Calendar on the left and the Finder on the right side. The first thing we need to do is we need to close the split-view. Before we create a new split-view, we have to close this one. What I’m going to do is I’m just going to close this window, Command+W. When I do that, it opens back up to my standard full screen. I’m no longer in split-view. Now, what I do is I go and open up my Calendar app. Let’s go and open up Calendar. Then, I go into Mission Control, swipe up with three fingers, and we drag my Calendar here to my Finder. When I do that, I’m able to view my Finder over on the right with my Calendar on the left.
Let’s go and add Safari. I’m going to go and close my Finder window here. I want to have Safari over here on the right. I Command+W to close the Finder window; Calendar opens up in full screen. I swipe over to the right, go over to Safari, and then swipe up with three fingers or use Control-Up arrow to get to my Mission Control, and then all I have to do is drag my Safari window here, up to my calendar window. Let’s go and do that. I can add it to the left side, or I can add it to the right side. I’m going to go on the right side here. When I click on it, now we have Safari on the right with my Calendar on the left. When you’re looking at your windows in split-view, you can also adjust how wide each window is by dragging this little vertical line to the left or right.
That’s how we use split-view on the Mac.
