In this lesson for macOS Mojave, I look at what’s new in the Mail app including the new Move To button, adding emojis to new messages, and using a lighter background for reading and writing messages while using the new dark appearance.

Now, let’s look at what’s new in Mail and macOS Mojave. Let’s go to my Mac. Let’s go and open up Mail. We have a few new features in Mail. Click on it. Our first option here is in the toolbar. You’re going to see we have this Move To. With the Move button here, what we can do is, we can quickly move messages around to our folders.
What’s nice about this is when you move a message to a specific folder, and you get another message from that same person, by default, the Move To button here will want to move it to that same folder. It makes it a lot quicker to organize messages, mainly when you receive messages from the same person. You train it once. Then you click on this button again, and it’ll move it to that same folder that you moved previous messages to.
I find this very handy because I have many folders in my Mail, probably too many. I need to whittle them down. When I get a Mail message from somebody, all I have to do now is tell Mail where I want it one time. Then the next time I get a Mail message from that person, by default, if I were to click on this button, it’ll move it to that same mailbox. That’s the new Move To button in the toolbar.
Another thing we have is we have an emoji button when we’re creating a new message. I’m going to go and create a new message. I click on Compose New Message here. Then I go over to the body. You’re going to see, in the upper right-hand corner, we have this emoji button. I click on it, a new window opens up, and now all I have to do is select which emoji I want. Now, you can easily add emojis to your Mail messages.
The last option is for Dark Mode. We covered this in the Dark Mode lesson, but let’s go and recap. When I’m in Dark Mode, I’m using a dark theme. Let’s go and put my computer into Dark Mode. To do that, we go down to our System Preferences. Then we go over to General, and we click on Dark. When I do this, Mail will turn into Dark Mode.
As I type here now, the text will be white against a dark background. When I’m looking at my other messages, I will go back over to this window here. When I look at this message here, we can see it’s in Dark Mode.
If you prefer to see your messages with a white background, what we need to do is, we need to go to Mail in the menu bar, and then go to Preferences. Under Viewing here, you’re going to see we have a new option and use dark backgrounds for messages. This is going to be on by default. This is why we see a dark background for messages.
When I turn this off, it’s going to use the lighter background for messages. It’s not going to change the overall theme. All it’s going to do is change into the lighter background for my messages.
Let’s go ahead and deselect this. Now, we can see that we have a lighter theme for our message. Let’s go over to my draft. Click on the draft. Again, we’re using the lighter theme, but I am still using Dark Mode. You will only see that preference when you’re in Dark Mode. If you’re using the Light theme, you will not see that preference.
That is what’s new in Mail with macOS Mojave.
