In this lesson for macOS Mojave, I look at how to insert a photo a document on the Mac using the camera on your iPhone or iPad. This is done through the new Continuity Camera feature Apple added in macOS Mojave.
Video Transcript (video also has closed captions):
In this video, we’re going to take a look at how we use Continuity Camera to insert photos or scan documents from our iOS device, including both our iPad and our iPhone into our Mac. Let’s go to My Mac. Now, if we look here, you’re going to see I’m looking at a mail message. Now, this is a new message. Over on the right, I also have my iPhone. Now, I’m showing my iPhone because I can easily insert a picture from my iPhone into my mail message here. We’re also going to see how we can do this with the Notes, but you can do with Pages, Keynote, and other apps.
The first thing I need to do is I need to place my cursor in where I type in my message. Now what I can do is I can start typing, but that’s not what I want to do. What I want to do is I want to insert a photo from my iPhone. To do that, what I do is I go up under File in the menu bar, and then you’re going to see Import from iPhone or iPad. You can see I can select from my iPhone, and I can also choose from my iPad. Now, what I’m going to do is I’m going to take a photo from my iPhone. If I wanted to scan a document with my iPhone, I could scan a document, but I want to take a photo. Now watch my iPhone on the right. It is going to wake up, and you’re going to see my camera.
I’m going to take a photo here. We have Take a Photo from Dan’s iPhone. We can see that the phone woke up, and it’s ready to take a photo. Let’s take a photo of my messy desk here. Tap on the Photo button. Now all I need to do is tap on Use Photo in the lower right-hand corner of my iPhone. If I want to retake it, I can tap on Retake. I’m going to use this photo. Now we can see it is in my mail message. With Continuity Camera, it automatically wakes up your phone and puts it into the camera mode, so then you can take your photo. Once you take your photo, it inserts it into your application.
Let’s take a look at this in Notes. Now what I’m going to do is I’m going to click on my notes here. I have a blank note. Again, I go up under File, and then we go over to Import from iPhone or iPad, but I can also go over to the right here, and you’re going to see my Photo icon. When I click on this, I’m able to insert a photo from my iPhone. Another way we can insert a photo is if we go and control-click on it. I’m going to hold down the control key, and I click here, and you’re going to see Import from iPhone or iPad. Again, I’m going to go over to take a photo. If I wanted to scan a document, I could also scan a document, but I’m going to take a photo.
Watch my iPhone on the right. It’s going to wake up. I have my desktop here. I tap on the Photo button, and then I tap on Use Photo. Now it is going to insert that into my note.
That’s how we use Continuity Camera to insert photos and scan documents from our iPhone or iPad into our Mac.
