In this lesson, I give a general overview of what is new in iPadOS 14. This includes a quick look a the new Today View Widgets, the new compact search and Siri views, and the new sidebars and pulldown menus available on the iPad. I also look at the new Privacy report in Safari, how you can now pin conversations in Massages, the new filtering options in Photos, and how you can organize lists in the Reminders app. See what’s new in iPadOS 14 in this lesson.

In this video, I’m going to give you an overview of what’s new in iPadOS 14. I’m just basically going to show you some of the features. I’m not going to detail how the features work that will be covered in subsequent videos. But I want to show you how you can look forward to once you download iPadOS 14.
So let’s get to it and take a look at some of these new features. Let’s go to my iPad. Let’s first look at the today view. They redesigned the widgets that are in the today view. Or if we look over to my left, you’re going to see; I have my today view. These are all the different widgets that I have in my today view.
We now have different size widgets. I can stack widgets. I’m going to swipe up with this widget here, and you’re going to see that it is multiple pull widgets here. Let’s move this up here a little bit. Okay. As I swiped through the stack of widgets, I can see where I am in that stack. So we have newly redesigned widgets here.
We have a new compact search in the past. When we searched our iPad, it took over the entire display. Now, when I swiped down here, we have a compact search. The same thing with Siri, when I press and hold on the home button to get Siri in the past, it took over the entire display, my entire iPad. Now what it’s going to do is it’s going to go in the lower right-hand corner.
And on top of that, I’m able to interact with my iPad while Siri is listening to me. So I press and hold on the home button here to get Siri. We can see Siri down here. She’s listening to me. And also, I can interact with my iPad. I’m going to press the home button here to turn Siri off. We have a new sidebar in our apps along with a new pull-down menu.
When I go to my files app, you’re going to see; I have this new sidebar. The sidebar can be hidden by tapping on the icon in the upper left-hand corner. And then if I want to show it again, I can tap on the icon, or what I can do is I can pull to the right from the left edge, and I can see my sidebar.
I swipe it back over it, hides it. If I want to show permanently, I tap on it again. And it always shows it. You’re going to; you see the sidebar in more apps. Also, we have a new pull-down menu. When we go over to the upper right-hand corner, I have this icon here. This is where I can change my view of my folders here in the files app.
I can also sort my files and folders here. While when I them on this, you’re going to see a pull-down menu. This is where I can change my view. And this is where I can change the sort order. I tap anywhere to close that menu. You can now set the default browser as well as the default mail client.
I’m going to press in on the home button. I have Chrome installed. If I swipe over to the left, you’re going to see Google Chrome. I want to use this as my default browser to do that. What we need to do is we need to go to Chrome settings. So now, I go over to settings here. And then over on the left side, I swipe up until I find Chrome, and you’re going to see an option for default browser app right now to set to Safari. I tap on this to change it to Chrome. Now Apple does have to approve the app to be set for the default browser app. As of the time that I recorded this, Chrome is the only browser that has been approved for this. So if you download Firefox, you may not be able to set it as your default browser yet because Apple hasn’t approved it.
Same thing with Mail. If you use another mail clients such as Spark, it may not have been approved by Apple yet to be a default mail app. So be aware of that. Not all apps have been approved. They do have to be approved by Apple. Let’s go over to Safari. I press in on the home button, and now I go over to Safari.
We can now translate websites. This website here is in Spanish. What I would like to do is I would like to translate it into English will. All I need to do is go up to the top. Here. We get our search bar, and then over on the left, under the double A’s, you’re going to see translate. It’s going to translate it to your preferred language, in my case English.
So now I tap on this, give it a few seconds. We can see that it is in translate mode, and it translated that text. So if you’re on a website that is in a foreign language, you can now translate it to your preferred language. In my case, English, to bring it back, we tap on this again, and then we show original review original.
We also have a privacy report. I’m going to go to CNN here. And when we go back up to our double A’s, what we’re able to do is see how many trackers have been prevented. I tap on this; I get a report. And when we go to CNN, we can see that there have been 58 trackers. If you tap on this, you can see what those trackers are. I’m going to go back to the privacy report, and then we tap on done. Let’s take a look at what’s new with messages I press in on the home button. And then we go over to messages with messages. I can now pin my conversations to the top of my conversation list. I swipe over to the right. We have our pin. When I tap on it, it pins that conversation to the top.
So I want to pin my conversations with Beth at the top. So they’re easy to find. All I have to do is swipe over to the right. And if I keep swiping, it’ll automatically pin that conversation. I tap on this to view that conversation. I have inline replies. This is great for group messages. I’m able to isolate a conversation between a couple of people within a group conversation.
When we look at this conversation here, there are three people involved in this conversation. What I can do is I can isolate the conversation between two people. Now, I’m only seeing the conversation between these two people here. I’m not seeing the third person. If we look here in the upper right-hand corner, you’re going to see that that third person there is blurred out.
When I swipe down, it only shows me the conversation. Between those two people to see everyone again, to tap anywhere. And now, I can see all of the conversations between everyone. Now let’s take a look at photos. I press in on the home button. Remember that sidebar that I mentioned? Well, when we go to photos here, you’re going to see we have that sidebar here.
I can hide the sidebar. I can swipe over to the right from the left edge. To view it, or if I want to show it again permanently, I tap on it, and it shows me a sidebar. I have new zoom options here, easier navigation, and zoom options by pension and zooming. And I also have new filtering options. I tap on more in the upper right-hand corner, and then I go over to filter, and I can filter my photos by these different categories.
I’m going to tap on done. When we tap on a photo, if you swipe up, you can also add a caption. Let’s take a look at maps. I open up maps with maps. We have new guides. I’m going to go to San Francisco here. When we look here, you’re going to see what we have. Guides for San Francisco. This one here is by Atlas obscure.
I swipe over to the left, this ones by all trails, this ones by lonely planet. I tap on any one of them to open up the guide. And then, from there, I can read about San Francisco through this guide. I also have cycling directions. I’m going to close this year. And let’s tap on directions. What we’re going to do is we’re going to go from the stinking Rose over to the cable car museum.
So now I tap in here to change my location. We’re just going to go to the stinking Rose here. It’s a garlic restaurant in San Francisco. I tap on it. And now what we’re going to do is go to the cable car museum.
I tap on the cable car museum. I need directions. So I tap on row. And then I tap on cycling. When I do this, it’s going to give me cycling directions. It’s telling me that I will be sharing my road with vehicles, and it may require some walking. I can also see what the climb will be, which could be useful in a city like San Francisco.
If I want to Boyd Hills and busy roads, I can do that as well. Now. Not all cities have these cycling directions. My hometown here in Holland doesn’t have any cycling directions. That’s why I had to go to San Francisco with reminders. We can now organize our smart lists. Let’s go to my reminders here, and now I tap on reminders.
We have our smart lists here. If I tap on edit. What I’m able to do is organize these. I drag these lines up and down to reorganize them. If I want to hide any one of them, maybe I don’t use flag reminders. So I don’t want to see my flag reminders. I tap on this to hide it. And when I tap on done, those flagged reminders are no longer shown.
I can now assign reminders to people that I’m sharing the list with. We can see that I have one to do here assigned to me. I have a new calendar and a time picker. Let’s go and open up a reminder and change the date and time I tap on the eye. And then I tap on the slider to change the date. We can see we have a calendar here, and if I want to change the time, I tap on the slider for the time.
And then from here, I can type in a new time. You can see that this is a new picker. And then I can also add it multiple reminders at the same time to do that. All we have to do is just select multiple reminders. So I’m going to go in to go to my reminders here, and let’s select these reminders. I go up to the more button. I select reminders, tap the ones I want to select.
We’re just going to tap—three of them here. And from here, I can change the date and time for these three reminders. I can add them to a folder and then flag them and Mark them as complete with the notes app. If you have a pencil, we can now scribble text or write text, and we have shaped detection.
As an example, when I draw a star, the iPad will realize that I’m drawing a star and replacing what I’ve drawn with a star. So those are some of the new items or new features that we have with iPadOS 14. Again, I’ll be taking a look at these features in more detail in subsequent videos, but in this video, I just wanted to give you an overview of what you can look forward to with iPadOS 14.
So those are some of the new features that we have with iPadOS 14.
